Mr. Fauteux has been teaching mediation and participatory justice in the Civil Law Section of the Faculty of Law of the University of Ottawa since 2013. He taught international commercial arbitration at the École du Barreau du Québec from 2012 to 2017.

Mr. Fauteux is one of six Canadians to whom the Hague Academy of International Law has awarded its Diploma, a high-level recognition granted to candidates with profound knowledge who successfully undergo an extremely selective examination. A diplomat from 1980 to 2000, he participated in or led Canada’s participation in the negotiation of over 50 international agreements and authored around twenty articles on international law.
He was Director General of the Climate Change Bureau at Environment Canada from 2000 to 2004, he subsequently served as Director General of Lands at Indian Affairs and Northern Development Canada from 2004 to 2010. In private practice since 2011, he notably drafted an expert option cited with approval by the Quebec Superior Court on the international legal basis for jointly suing the United Nations and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.
He founded the International Consortium on Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) and Climate Justice, and he testified before Committees of the House of Commons and the Senate of Canada on environmental and climate issues. He established the Madinina Scholarship Fund at the Faculty of Law of the University of Montreal to provide financial assistance to Indigenous and Black students.
He served as external specialist in conflict resolution for the Conflict Management Program of Public Services and Procurement Canada, and partnered with the Canadian Institute for Conflict Resolution (CICR) and the Listuguj Mi’gmaq First Nation Government, with the support of the Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador, to provide training in mediation and conflict resolution to meambers of this First Nation. He was appointed by the Governor General in Council as a member of the Public Service Labour Relations and Employment Board, where he served as an administrative judge.
Mr. Fauteux helps businesses and individuals prevent and resolve conflicts in a climate of trust and respect whenever possible, and to prevail in judicial and arbitration courts when necessary. He practices mediation and litigation in civil, commercial, and family matters in both civil law and common law in Quebec and Ontario. He represents businesses as counsel in international commercial arbitration under the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce Rules and other rules. He also serves as a mediator and resolution facilitator for the Canadian Sports Dispute Resolution Centre .
